Down in Yon Forest

about

"Down in Yon Forest" is an old English folk carol dating back to the Renaissance, with its ultimate origins in the mediaeval (and rather non-Christmassy!) Corpus Christi Carol.

It has everything that I love most about Christmas carols in the English folk tradition: a gorgeous tune, emotional intensity, and gloriously vivid (and beautifully weird!) imagery. What more could you want? :-)

lyrics

1. Down in yon forest there stands a hall,
(The bells of Paradise I heard them ring)
It's covered all over with purple and pall.
(And I love my lord Jesus above any thing.)

2. In that hall there stands a bed,
(The bells of Paradise I heard them ring)
It's covered all over with scarlet so red.
(And I love my lord Jesus above any thing.)

3. At the bed-side there lies a stone,
Which the sweet Virgin Mary knelt upon.

4. Under that bed there runs a flood,
The one half runs water and the other runs blood.

5. At the bed's foot there grow a thorn,
Which ever blows blossom since He was born.

6. Over that bed the moon shines bright,
Denoting our Saviour was born on this night.
